Herbal Folklore ~ Our Healing Heritage ~ 1/06/08
Herbal folklore is the traditional knowledge and practice that is disseminated largely through oral communication, handed down from one generation to the next, and it is a deeply significant dimension of culture and but it has been lost, because it has not been handed down very consistently in the last 50 years.
I believe this is because it has been too easy, when sick, to see a doctor who will prescribe a pill. Generally, this is quite effective for relieving pain but not, necessarily, in curing the problem. Then, there are the possible side effects caused by the drugs prescribed.
We do not need to make new herbal remedies for the 21st Century: we can delve into our past and revive many tried and effective treatments used for every ailment of man.
Some may think that 'folklore' refers to something old-fashioned or untrue: as an 'old wives tale' or 'misinformation of the uneducated'. However, many scientific studies affirm the traditional beliefs and uses of herbal folklore and their treatments.
Traditional knowledge is still valid and meaningful for our present day.
