Many years ago, at a regular feature of farm walks at the Herb Farm, a man said that he thoroughly enjoyed seeing and hearing about so many edible plants, but he would never remember everything, and he suggested that Isabell write a book of herbs and their uses, that was the beginning of the idea.
Over the years, many people have echoed the same thoughts, and encouraged Isabell to write, saying how much they have appreciated the interesting articles that were printed in a number of magazines.
But, where to find the time to write, in long days of herb farming, answering the phone, mailing out orders, etc? Then in 2001, Derrick (Isabell’s husband) retired, the farm was handed over to the family, and time was made for researching and writing.
Isabell says, “However when I started writing, I had no idea of the magnitude of such a task, and it has been a long commitment of time, energy and resources. Neither, was I aware of all the possible costs involved with such a book.
Then it looked as though the manuscript would be too large for one book, and it was suggested that it be printed in two volumes”. In the end, a decision was made to format it into one book, and this will probably still be the most cost effective.

I ordered Isabel Shipard’s How can I use herbs in daily life after it was recommended by a lecturer. I am a naturopathy student. It is a wonderful book, it is written in a way that you feel like Isabel is talking to you. She teaches us all the wonders of herbs in a language that we can all understand. She also includes lots of interesting stories that people have shared with her. It is set out in an easy to read way and includes information on description, constituents, minerals, actions and medicinal uses. I have really enjoyed reading and learning from the book.

This Amazing book ‘How can I use Herbs in my Daily Life’ has been a godsend.
I’ve had this book, otherwise known as my Bible, for 15 years while bringing up young children naturally. It’s been utilised so often for various ailments that its getting a bit ratty and dog eared.
Thanks to this magnificent book I have many, many of the medicinal herbs in my garden in these troubled times. From Elderberry (thank you syrup) to Herb Robert, Gotu Kola, chicory, lemon myrtle and many more. It has certainly been a blessing in disguise and I am very grateful for its presence in my life. Thank you. ???

What an amazing herbal reference book this is! I have been diving into mine regularly since early 2005. Everything you need to know about herbs from Acerola to Yucca, and how to treat everything from Abscesses to Wounds. When I accidently burnt the palm of my hand on a hotplate, how grateful I was to have already read Isabell’s advice to use aloe vera gel. It saved my hand from infection, pain and disfigurement. I have learnt so much more from this book written by a remarkable woman with an extraordinary breadth of knowledge of herbs and their uses. No home should be without a copy.
